Joi Mebane on Beauty, Business, and Building a Life of Luxury

For Joi Mebane, beauty was never meant to stop at the mirror.
After more than two decades in the industry, the founder of The Look By Joi has built a brand that reaches far beyond brows and beauty services. At the center of it is a bigger idea: that beauty can become a vehicle for confidence, independence, and financial freedom.
“I didn’t want to just do brows,” she says. “I wanted to teach women how to turn beauty into a bankable business.”
That philosophy has shaped everything Joi has built since.
What began as a beauty brand has grown into a platform rooted in education, entrepreneurship, personal style, and the kind of lifestyle Joi believes women should feel empowered to create for themselves.
For her, success is not simply about growing a company.
It is about building a life that gives you options.
Beauty as a Pathway to Ownership
Joi has spent more than 23 years working in beauty, and during that time, she has seen firsthand how one skill can change far more than someone’s appearance.
It can change their confidence.
It can also change their income.
That realization became one of the driving forces behind The Look By Joi.
“The Look By Joi became bigger than beauty,” she says. “It became a pathway to freedom, ownership, and wealth.”
It is a message that appears throughout her work, whether she is teaching, creating content, or encouraging other women to think more seriously about the business behind their craft.
For Joi, aesthetics matter—but structure matters just as much.
“A pretty brand with no business won’t last,” she says. “And a strong business with no presence won’t grow. You need both.”
Redefining Luxury
Travel has also played a major role in shaping Joi’s perspective on success.
From yacht shows and luxury dinners to traveling for events and appearing on Below Deck Down Under, those experiences have expanded her definition of what self-care can look like.
“Self-care isn’t just spa days,” she says. “It’s access. It’s experiences. It’s being in rooms, on yachts, in destinations where you can breathe differently.”
That shift has changed the way she thinks about luxury too.
“Luxury used to mean things. Now it means options.”
For Joi, that means being able to travel when she wants, work from anywhere, enjoy extraordinary experiences, and still protect her peace.
It might look like dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant one evening or spending time on a yacht the next, but the real luxury is having control over how her life feels.
“It’s not being rushed or stressed,” she says. “It’s a standard I’ve built into my everyday life.”
Building a Business Around the Life
That mindset did not come automatically.
Like many entrepreneurs, Joi had to learn the limits of constant work.
“Burnout will humble you,” she says.
Today, she builds her business around her lifestyle rather than allowing the business to consume it. Systems, automation, and intentional scheduling have become essential parts of how she works.
“You can’t show up as a luxury brand if you’re operating from exhaustion.”
For Joi, rest and ambition are no longer opposites.
They are part of the same strategy.
The goal is not simply to work harder. It is to build a business that gives you room to live.
Life Beyond the Beauty Chair
That philosophy carries naturally into the coastal and luxury spaces Joi has increasingly found herself drawn to.
She describes the coastal lifestyle as one of “freedom and flow.”
“It’s not just about the location,” she says. “It’s about the energy.”
Whether she is aboard a yacht, sitting down for a beachside dinner, or traveling for an event, the appeal comes from what those experiences represent: a life built with intention.
Her appearance on Below Deck Down Under was another extension of that.
“I’ve always been drawn to luxury environments—yachts, travel, high-level experiences,” she says. “So it felt natural.”
And, as Joi jokes, much of that experience involved eating.
“All we did was eat!”
But even that became part of the appeal.
Luxury, in her world, is not solely about what something costs. It is about experience, indulgence, ease, and the ability to enjoy what you have built.
Style Is Part of the Strategy
Joi also has little interest in separating personal style from business.
To her, the way an entrepreneur presents herself is part of the brand.
“Your style is your strategy.”
That does not mean appearance alone is enough.
Behind the visual identity, there still need to be systems, offers, and real ways to monetize the business.
Style may attract attention, but structure is what allows a brand to last.
That balance between presence and business acumen has become central to Joi’s message to other women.
Staying Grounded as the Brand Grows
As her visibility grows, Joi says she remains focused on the reason she started.
“I stay grounded by remembering where I started and why I’m doing this.”
She keeps a close circle, protects her energy, and stays connected to everyday life even as the brand becomes more elevated.
For her, authenticity is not something to abandon as success grows.
It is what keeps people connected.
“Everything I’m building is bigger than me,” she says. “It’s about showing other women what’s possible.”
Living Well and Earning Well
That mission now stretches across several parts of Joi’s brand, including her It’s Cooking with Joi series, her Beauty Isn’t Going Anywhere education tour, her travel experiences, and her work helping women understand the business side of beauty.
“I’m not just building a beauty brand; I’m building a movement.”
The common thread is simple: live well and earn well.
For Joi, the two were never meant to compete.
Success can be stylish. Ambition can leave room for rest. Luxury can mean a yacht or a beautiful dinner, but it can also mean waking up with control over your own time.
And perhaps that is the most compelling part of Joi’s story.
She is not simply teaching women how to build a beauty business.
She is showing them what that business can make possible.
